Let's Talk About Sex.
September 09, 2020
Let's talk about sex.
When was the last time, you gave yourself the opportunity to understand your sexual wellness on a deeper level? Have you given yourself permission to do so?Level Up continues to challenge the way we look at learning and want to make sure we empower women to look at their lives holistically. We hope to empower voices to discuss our experiences and break free of societal expectations and norms.
Dr. J has spent the last few decades talking about sex. She’s now joined Level Up to lead our conversations about Sexual Wellness.
Dr. J champions sex-positive and holistic sexuality education utilizing personal qualities of genuineness, a non-judgmental attitude filled with compassion and empathy.
Meet the teacher, Dr. J!
What is your passion?
My passion is to empower others, to feel positive, curious, and happy with their sexuality. Since sexuality is a natural part of us, I want to help women tap into their own so they can have a full human experience.
Why are you sharing your passion with our Level Up learning community?
I love to see connections unfold, and this is a perfect community to enjoy that. My alliance with a new tech sexuality education project pointed me to this location. Level Up is such a positive and uplifting platform that I wanted to take part.Overall, my life plan never occurred in a straight line. While in one place, I found something else interesting and moved on to it. Three different degrees show that. Teaching different courses at two different colleges shows that. Now, after retirement, I’ve found other creative avenues that are intriguing and I just go there. Since my publishing life began in 2016, I find it changing too. My first draft romance novel is being edited, and I outlined a nonfiction book on how to write sex scenes. These items were never on my original to-do list. It's what life gave me and I went with it. The technology available today allows for a larger stage to share my sex knowledge beyond one college classroom. That’s reflected with Level Up and I can be a conduit here for goals, dreams, and inspiration for MORE.In what ways do you find yourself looking to level up?
Sometimes I think I was born to level up. While sexuality has been my do more, know more, I’ve surprised myself that writing has also become my newest personal level up topic. I attend classes to learn as much as I can about the craft of writing. I also teach classes on what I have learned. What's the most daring thing you've ever done?
I am a traveling risk taker. I love experiencing nature. I went to New Zealand on a ski trip. While there, I skied the Tasman Glacier, which wasn’t on the planned itinerary. A plane dropped me off at the top. When I jumped out, I was up to my neck in snow. I think I experienced a panic attack at that moment.
After I calmed myself down, I figured out how to get myself out of the hole. Thinking of the snow above me as a table top, I worked to jump up and splay my body out on top of the snow. Once on top, I got my skis on and off I went. It was the most breathtaking place I’d seen. It was the longest run I’ve ever skied, 21 miles. When I call up the memory, exhilaration charges forward. I think I received a bonus gift for my daring efforts. I came home pregnant with my first and only child. What's the most interesting thing you can see out of your office window?
My office is on the second floor of my house. My office window is two French doors onto a small porch. Surrounding the porch are palm trees. I picked that location in my house for my office for my island nature view. This makes me feel like I live in a tree house and nature inspires. I love to appreciate the natural settings where I live.
